Migration Projects for CIS Railways
In recent years, IBA participated in the fundamental modernization of information and computing systems (ICS) of the Belarusian, Turkmen, and Uzbek railways. The strategic goal was to migrate these systems from S/370 to the powerful IBM S/390 with OS/390 that allows for the use of the most up-to-date information technologies.
The work was done in the following two stages.
- System migration to IBM S/390 with OS/390 and porting of the applied software and data to the new operating environment. Creation of an environment for the development of new applications using advanced technologies.
- Migration of legacy applications (without the interruption of computing processes) and their gradual replacement by new software systems developed in the OS/390 environment using advanced technologies.
Modernization of the Information and Computing System of the Belarusian Railway
The information and computing system of the Belarusian Railway (BR) is designed to process the production activities of all railway departments. Two major automated systems are employed at the BR Central Computing Center (CCC), namely the Cargo Management System and the EXPRESS Passenger Traffic and Ticketing System. Both systems function on-line with a network of approximately 1200 terminals.
The BR CCC was among the first in the CIS to complete the first stage of the ICS fundamental modernization. In a short term, the system was migrated from S/370 to S/390 with OS/390 and an environment for the development of new applications was created based on state-of-the-art technologies.
Recently, the implementation of the second stage of the railway modernization was launched. The Cargo Management System was modified using the advanced tools (including DB2 DBMS, Data Warehouse, and OLAP Server) for OS/390 and Windows NT. The principal goal was to provide the railway management with the up-to-date information about the train, cargo, and finance traffic with the possibility to analyze the efficiency of the railway operation.
Modernization of the Information and Computing System of the Turkmen Railway
IBA successfully executed its obligations under the contract with the Department of the Turkmen Railway “Turkmendemirellary". As a result, the Computing Center in the city of Ashgabat was reequipped stage-by-stage with the subsequent transfer of the cargo management center from the computing center of the city of Chardzhev to the computing center of Ashgabat.
IBA performed planning, generation, and installation of OS/390, ported the Passenger Traffic and Ticketing System to OS/390 and conducted express training of the computing center staff.
The cargo management system of the Turkmen Railway is functioning fault-free on a new platform with a new operating system (OS/390).
As a result, the first stage of the fundamental modernization was completed. The system was migrated from S/370 (IBM 4381 with TKS) to S/390 with OS/390 and an environment for the development of new applications was created based on state-of-the-art technologies.
Modernization of the Information and Computing System of the Uzbek Railway
IBA successfully executed its obligations under the contract with the state-owned railway company “Uzbek Temir Iullari”. The subject of the contract was the delivery of the advanced IBM equipment of S/390 architecture, as well as planning, generation, and installation of OS/390, migration to OS/390 of a set of programs that manage cargo and passenger traffic, and express training of the customer staff.
The cargo and passenger management system is successfully functioning on the new platform and with the new operation system (OS/390).
The first stage of the fundamental modernization of the Uzbek Railway was successfully completed. The system was migrated from S/370 (IBM 4381 with TKS) to S/390 with OS/390 and an environment for the development of new applications was created based on state-of-the-art technologies.
