IBA Payment System

The IBA Payment System provides a wide range of retail banking services. The IBA Payment System is built on a network of self–service terminals with IBA software for the IBA Information and Transaction Terminal (ITT) and IBA Payment Server.

Operation Procedure

A customer request for a financial transaction is sent from a terminal/computer/mobile phone to the IBA Payment / SMS Banking / Internet Banking Server. The Server accepts the request, provides the user with the needed information from the service provider, sends the authorized request to the bank's processing center, and transfers transaction results to the customer. After the operation is completed, the Server enters the transaction in its transaction database.

At the close of the day, the Server sends a report on completed transactions to the bank's processing center and the Bills System of the service provider.

Automated Fare Collection System






IBA Group implemented an Automated Fare Collection (AFC) System for public transport after winning a tender invited by Minsktrans, the main transport operator of Minsk, the capital of Belarus. Minsk authorities aimed to modify the ticketing system that functioned in the city's public transport to make it more efficient and to present Minsk as a modern city to the visitors of the 2014 IIHF World Ice Hockey Championship.

The client' requirements included competitive costs, short implementation time, and high security. The system covered underground (Metro), buses, trolley–buses, trams, and Minsk railway city lines.

The AFC System suggested by IBA is similar to the Oyster card system in London. However, IBA put together POS, card and paper ticket validators, inspector terminals, onboard computers, and software. All data flow to the data processing center, enabling the customer to benefit from the knowledge the system provides on how people move around the city. In some cases, these data can be as valuable as the AFC system itself.

The AFC infrastructure includes card validators, paper ticket validators, onboard controllers, onboard computers, inspector terminals, POS terminals, a card issuing center, and a processing center.

An onboard controller is connected to an onboard computer and exchanges data with the processing center via GPRS communication channel. The processing center collects all operational data and manages all processes in the acceptance infrastructure.

A card validator mounted onboard a vehicle or at a Metro gate accepts fares. If a passenger taps a card on a card validator twice, the card balance is displayed. The card validator informs a passenger about payment results using a running text line, a light indicator, and a sound signal.

A paper ticket validator accepts single paper tickets. Information about a passenger trip is printed on a paper ticket, including the date, time, type of transport, and route. A dispatching device transmits the printed information to the paper ticket validator via onboard controller.

Most points of ticket sales are located in stand–alone kiosks. Minsktrans required that neither personal computers nor tablets be installed inside kiosks to avoid robbery. IBA found a solution by utilizing POS devices with contactless card readers. In addition to contactless cards, POS devices support standard financial transactions.

The AFC System provides a high level of security because unique keys are generated dynamically for each contactless card, and safe storage of keys is provided in the peripheral devices. The system has a backup that maintains the system's operation in case of a long–term loss of GSM communication with the processing center.

Issues and Implementation

Each transport, be it bus, trolley–bus or tram has many specific features in terms of hardware installation and power supply. IBA decided to use data transmission standards from the automobile industry. All equipment inside a transport vehicle uses a CAN (Controller Area Network) bus that enables microcontrollers and peripheral devices to communicate with each other within a vehicle without a host computer.

A remote control system was needed to operate a huge number of peripheral devices. An online system would not work properly because of the low quality of communication channels. IBA made a decision to create an offline system with a function of remote transfer of operational data and remote software control via GSM.

About 40 percent of trips in Minsk are covered by paper tickets. To address the issue, IBA suggested that paper ticket validators be used as part of the AFC system. Initially, our proposal was to create a fully contactless system. IBA examined the possibility of using I–Code and MIFARE Ultralight cards as single tickets, but it turned out to be too expensive. Therefore, a decision was made to use paper tickets in addition to cards.

The Metro required that any operation with a contactless card at Metro gates take less than 0.3 seconds, while ensuring strong security. IBA found a solution by using the MIFARE PLUS technology combined with NXP SAM modules in AV2 mode.

Another issue was a legacy fare collection system that was functioning in the Metro. It was based on the MIFARE Classic technology. The disadvantages included inflexible tariff plans and the need for passengers to exchange card passes to a new ones every month and for the Metro to issue a multitude of cards.

IBA selected MIFARE PLUS Security Level 3, a high security standard designed for processing of financial transactions. At project launch, a case of hacking of MIFARE Classic cards was already known. IBA conducted a market research to find hardware and software that supports MIFARE PLUS for an AFC system. Surprisingly, a research by IBA revealed that vendors just declared that they provide such functionality but in reality a properly functioning solution did not exist. IBA developed its own solution and created hardware and software that fully support the MIFARE PLUS technology.


IBA signed an agreement with Minsktrans in September, 2013. A pilot project was launched in December, 2013. Completed in April, 2014, the system successfully sustained the influx of hockey fans who visited the 2014 IIHF World Ice Hockey Championship.

After commissioning the AFC System, IBA conducted training of the Minsktrans personnel, enabling them to provide technical support independently.

As a result, the customer gained full control of the processes going on in public transport. Currently, Minsktrans processes more than 1,000,000 card transactions per day and more than 300,000 paper tickets per day. More than 15,000 card validators and more than 3,000 ticket validators function in the city's public transport.

The POS network amounts to more than 400 points of ticket sales and 400 inspector terminals are used to check fares in public transport.

Electronic tickets provide extra flexibility for tariff plans. Today, a transport card can contain six different types of tariffs simultaneously. Any tariff type can be created for any combination of transport vehicles.

To sell transport cards, Minsktrans uses the existing kiosks served by salespeople and equipped with POS. In addition, IBA developed self–service terminals. Passengers can easily top a transport card up in cash or by credit card.

IBA Group also developed a similar solution for the railway city lines of Belarusian Railway and integrated the two solutions in a unified AFC System. The new system can be integrated with different information systems.

Public transport and railway city lines of Minsk convey about 2,000,000 passengers per day. For each transaction, more than ten data fields are completed, including the date and time, type, route, registration number, location of vehicle, cost of journey, and fare inspection results.

The AFC System has an analytical subsystem that generates different reports on system's operation, including passenger traffic, number and types of sold tickets, and operability of peripheral devices.

The analytical subsystem also detects illegal or stolen cards and unpaid replenishment of cards. Such cards are automatically put on blacklist and are not served by the AFC System.

IBA NFC Solution

The IBA NFC (Near Field Communication) Solution is a system based on touch–free technologies and is intended for companies and educational institutions. The system automates access control and time tracking, and allows for internal non–cash payments.

All operations within the system are carried out using a touch–free plastic card. The design of the card can be defined by the customer.


The main element of the system is an employee's touch–free plastic card. Using this card as an electronic key, a person is identified at the checkpoints. The system also controls physical access to the company's territory and restricts access to certain areas. In addition, the touch — free plastic card is used for internal cashless payments within a company or educational institution.

The input of money sums intended for internal cashless payments using the IBA NFC SOLUTION may be carried out from bank payment terminals. As soon as the user deposits money, it is transferred to the company's account. From time to time, the bank generates a register of payments and sends it to the company. The company adds the money to internal accounts of its employees in accordance with the register.

The internal account can be used to organize the company's social package. For example, a particular sum of money can be transferred daily for the subsidized meals of employees.

When implemented in educational institutions, additional features of the system may be used. Parents can take advantage of SMS alerts and be always aware of their child's whereabouts. When a child passes turnstiles or pays for his/her meals, parents receive an SMS or e–mail notification. A child does not need to carry cash with him/her as all the purchases are made through his/her internal card. In addition, parents can fix a limit of funds available on the card, thus excluding cases of theft, loss, or misuse of the money.

The system keeps records of all users, their accounts, events within the system, transactions, and generates reports, if necessary.
