IBA Group Releases IoT Solution for Railway

April 8, 2020

IBA Group and a Eastern European Railway successfully completed a pilot project for monitoring of the railway infrastructure. The IBA Group’s proprietary t-rail system monitors rail temperatures in real time and notifies users, if a critical condition occurs.

IBA Group and the client tested the system in working conditions. They installed a t-rail base station on a light mast at a height of 20 meters from the ground. Temperature sensors are located at a distance of 600 to 2,500 meters from the station.

The tests continued for three months. The sensors monitored the temperature and transmitted data to the control system that processed and archived the data. If a section reached critical temperature, t-rail sent SMS notifications to railway workers or maintenance personnel included in the test group. Various weather conditions, including rain, snow, and frost, as well as radio wave interference caused by power line noise did not affect the performance of the system elements.

t-rail is a hardware and software suite that consists of a software platform and wireless sensors fixed on rail strings and connected in a single network.  The main aim of the pilot project was to see how the system and its individual elements, namely a base station, sensors, and batteries, operate in working conditions.
